We are using participatory models in our decision making where the Board of Trustee are the highest decision makers. The Board are the Policy makers whose sole responsibility is providing a strategic direction for the Management team who implements the Board policy decisions and undertakes the day-to-day running of the organizations.

Jummai Makpu,Phd

Board Chair

Makpu Jummai Kasham is a philanthropist whose ambition is to bring about change on a scale. She holds a PhD in French from the University of Jos where she is a senior lecturer. Her outstanding experience in French have taken her around the world where she is proud to be called France her home. She is skilled in Strategy development. As the Chair of the Board of GEM, Makpu believes in the power of purposeful leadership and its role in moving towards a sustainable organization. She brings her network and ideas to help build the organization leadership approach and offer. She is a member of various Boards including Lamenema Development Initiative – a nonprofit focused on human capital and organizational development. Makpu is a member of many professional bodies such as the Teachers’ Registration Council of Nigeria (TRCN).

Shammah Keturah Samuel has begun her career in nonprofit establishing and leading an organization that nurtures young women by creating an enabling opportunities for them to fulfil their potentials. Her core experience at Girls Education Mission International (GEM) where she currently serves as Executive Director is developing and driving operational strategy; optimizing resources, process, and people improvement; corporate communication, translating strategy into actionable goals for optimal performance, growth, and sustainability. Being a skilled EduTech expert, Keturah has facilitated impact-driven education and digital skills campaign within Nigeria. She has led Women Technology workshops, teachers’ professional workshops, menstrual hygiene management campaigns among others. Her innovative leadership towards organizational growth and impact made GEM become an internationally Trusted, Effective, and Top-rated nonprofit for the 8th time with over 20,000 people reached. Keturah is a Digital Ambassador with World Pulse and a certified Intel Master Trainer. She is Alumni of various programs including Civic Leadership Management program by YALI Regional Leadership Center Accra Ghana, Google Africa scholarship Program, Andela Android Learning Community Program under the Mobile App and Web development tracks and Lagos Business School Nonprofit Leadership and Management Program. She has a degree in Education from the University of Jos and a certificate in Information and Communication Technology from the same University. Other professional trainings taken by Keturah includes, Monitoring and Evaluation Course by Philanthropy University, Entrepreneurship Course by Nasarawa State Vocational and Relevant Technology Board, Management Skills for Women Entrepreneurs in Tech by the International Telecommunication Union (ITU), Google Nonprofit Management Course by Nigerian Network of NGOs, Accountability Course by CIVICUS among many others. Keturah is an advocate for social good who is committed to promoting the realization of the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs), with focus on causes dear to her heart including social entrepreneurship, Girls Education, women’s right and economic empowerment and youth development. Keturah stands to advocate through written and oral memos before National Executives and committees of the joint National assembly on public policy that are detriment to the development of women and girls in Nigeria. Her personal and professional goal is to continue creating the environment, opportunities, and solutions to empower and enable self and organizational growth and sustainability. Keturah has over 15 international and local awards to her name. in 2015, she was named ‘Top Executive in Public Administration and ranked 8% of the overall Nigerian top executive in public administration with Excellence Award by the Nigerian Top Executives. Other awards includes Award of Unsurpassed performance by National Association of Nigerian Students (NANS), GirlChild Role Model Award by Women in Education and (AYDF), Women of Difference Award for Economic Empowerment of women by The International Alliance for Women (TIAW), Philanthropist of the Year by Extraordinary African Woman Achievers Awards, Star Award by LiftEffects UK And many others.

Legal Adviser

ulus Atna Elizabeth is a dedicated human and gender rights advocate and a legal practitioner. A lawyer by profession with LLB in human rights Law from the Amadu Bello University Zaria, she specializes in human and women rights advocacy and youth leadership and entrepreneurship development. She has dedicated the past 13 years to legal work specifically focused on defending, protecting, and promoting human rights. Before her current Position at F.M Kwede & Co, she served with Ekiti State Judiciary, High Court of Justice, Ado Ekiti. Atna has won several cases in and out of court. She has undergone various professional training from internationally and nationally recognized bodies. She is currently serving as a member of the Board of Trustees responsible for providing legal advice and ensuring compliance of the organization policies. Atna is generally noted as a motivator, mobilizer, organizer, mixer, and conceptualizer. She believes in equal opportunity, rights, and justice. She is an apostle of doing the right thing against the popular thing. She patronizes the media to discuss topical issues especially those that relate to peace, human rights, domestic Violence, governance, child protection, community life, self-worth, and personal development.

Maygaring Itswell Ya’u began her career as Bursar and cashier in the private sector gaining unparallel experience in the financial and marketing space. Having been inspired by her personal background and firsthand experience with GEM programs, Itswell became GEM’s pioneer financial manager who successfully worked hard to secure the first Grant for the organization worth over $12,000. Prior to her job with GEM, Itswell worked with Kaduna State Universal Education Board as a Classroom teacher. With her unique perspective when it comes to financial management, she currently runs a persona business. As a youth changemaker and one of the founding girls of Girls Education Mission International, Itswell brings to the Board of Trustees her youthful conviction to challenge Board thinking and the compassion to develop collaborative ways forward. She helps in shaping the Board emerging strategy and represents the voice of girls and young women in the Board and publicly through GEM events and programs. Itswell attended trainings on Innovative Solution to Agribusiness and SMEs Financing, Entrepreneurship Skills Development Financial Linkage organized by Moure Consult Nig. Ltd. And NIRSAL MicroFinance Bank. She holds a degree in Education from the University of Jos’ Affiliate institute.

Jidanke Helen Vou is an author, social entrepreneur, astute educationist, and administrator who spent her life teaching and in administration. She has devoted her time to counselling girls and young women in and out of school environment. During her years as school administrator, she introduced girls-related programs in her schools. These programs allowed female students in her school to obtain and learn life skills, menstrual hygiene, and reproductive health awareness. Hellen is a member of many professional bodies including Teachers’ Registration Council of Nigeria (TRCN). After her retirement as a senior lecturer from the Polytechnic, she established Prime Eagle Christian Academy – an internationally standard pre-primary and primary school that provides conducive and safe learning environment for children. As a professional teacher and administrator Hellen has expertise in educational constancy, coaching and mentoring, and public speaking. As an entrepreneur, Helen co-founded Balm of Gilead Sele Rat Initiative and has a key management role in the initiative Board.

Samuel David Shammah is an Author, social entrepreneur, and a strategic thinker and planner. He is an ordained minister of the gospel with ECWA with commission to mentoring youth and children. Samuel is Founder and CEO of SKREK Integrated Global Limited, a limited liability company he established that produces and supplies interlocking blocks and provides general services. Before setting up SKREK, Samuel served as a strategic plan coordinator of ECWA Bukuru District Council where he rose to the rank of management staff. While working with ECWA Bukuru District, he not only helped revitalize the district but also set up sustainable model for the organization’s long-term framework. He has published 4 books on children and youth related matters and has received an Excellent Award on Strategic Planning and leadership development by ECWA. Shammah sets out to encourage personal development in youth, while providing an outlet for their stresses and anxieties. Having successfully organized and run camps targeting youth for over 10years in partnership with ECWA Camp Youth Alive and Camp Eagle, to consolidate his passion, Samuel is currently setting up a Youth Camp Center that will accommodate and encourage personal development in youth and children. Rev. Samuel has earned undergraduate and graduate degree in Christian Education from University of Jos and Jos ECWA Theological Seminary (JETS) respectively. He has participated in professional training courses on Leadership, Strategic Planning, Youth Development and Gender.
